Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, former India pacer Ashish Nehra has reportedly turned down BCCI’s offer to be India’s T20I coach
Former India pacer Ashish Nehra was reportedly approached by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the role of India’s T20 coach. Rahul Dravid’s term as the head coach for all formats of the Indian cricket team concluded after the ICC World Cup 2023, where India faced a defeat in the final.
However, as per a report from the Indian Express, Ashish Nehra has declined the offer.
In pursuit of breaking India’s decade-long ICC title drought and with an eye on the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, the BCCI reached out to Nehra. This interest could be attributed to Nehra’s achievements during his coaching stint with the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League. In the 2022 season, under his guidance, the team clinched the title, and in the 2023 edition, they secured the second-place finish.

Nevertheless, following Nehra’s rejection of the T20I head coach position, the BCCI is now keen on retaining Rahul Dravid as the head coach across all three formats.
India captain Rohit Sharma and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar are both in agreement that Rahul Dravid should extend his coaching tenure until the upcoming T20 World Cup next year. If Dravid agrees to the proposal, it is expected that there will be continuity in the coaching staff, with the likelihood of core members like bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and batting coach Vikram Rathour receiving contract renewals.
Nevertheless, Dravid remains indecisive about committing to a long-term role due to the demanding schedule and workload associated with it. He leans towards a position that doesn’t involve extensive travel, such as the head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru or a potential role in the IPL.
