South Africa lost their sixth knockout match in ODI World Cup after they got defeated by Australia at the Eden Gardens.

Team South Africa yet again had their hearts broken after they failed to qualify for the final match of the Cricket World Cup. The Proteas lost to Australia by 3 wickets in the second semi-final of the WC played at the Eden Gardens. Meanwhile, the fans on the internet took a dig at the South Africa cricket team for justifying their tag as ‘Chokers’.

South Africa lost their sixth knockout game in ODI WC

To note, this was South Africa’s sixth loss in a World Cup knockout match. The Proteas lost their first-ever knockout match in 1992 thanks to some bizarre DLS calculation. Before today’s loss against Australia, South Africa reached the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup but lost to New Zealand.

Earlier, the African side reached the semi-finals of the 2007 World Cup and the Quarter-finals of the 2011 WC. As mentioned above, their most recent defeat in the World Cup knockouts came against Australia at the Eden Gardens on Thursday. After managing to score just 212 runs, South Africa managed to grab seven Australian wickets but the partnership between Cummins and Starc meant that the Aussies reached their 8th World Cup final.

“Yeah, cannot put in words. First of all, congratulations to Australia. Wishing them a good luck in the final. They played really well today, and credit should go to them. We displayed a brilliant character today, it came out throughout the game. We showed a lot of resilience,” said South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma.

“The way we started with the bat and the ball was the telling point, that’s where we lost the game. The conditions dictated terms, and it combined well with their pace attack, which is, without a doubt, a quality one. They put us under a lot of pressure,” he added.
