Rahul Dravid’s Coaching Future in Limbo as BCCI Contemplates Post-World Cup Decision

Rahul Dravid will discuss his future with the BCCI after a break following World Cup final. VVS Laxman will fill in as the interim head coach until then.
India Cricket Team will tour South Africa next month. However, it’s still not confirmed who will be their coach. Rahul Dravid and his coaching staff’s contract gets over with the Cricket World Cup final on November 19. And the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to discuss Dravid’s future. The man himself wanted to step down irrespective of the final result. VVS Laxman will fill in as an interim head coach for the IND vs AUS T20 series, starting Nov 23.
But he remains undecided. As things stand, BCCI wants to offer Rahul Dravid and his team an extension. But it will be up to the former India captain to decide whether he wants to stay on.
Earlier, BCCI left it to the Cricket World Cup success to discuss Rahul Dravid’s future. Having lost Asia Cup 2022, T20 World Cup 2022 and WTC Final 2023, BCCI wasn’t happy. However. the perception has changed with India’s dominance in the Asia Cup 2023 and Cricket World Cup 2023.

“There have been no discussions with Rahul on extension or renewal. We are all focused on World Cup at the moment. But yes, we will have a discussion with Rahul before the WC and prepare a contingency around it. So far, we have received no indication that he doesn’t want to continue,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport earlier.
However, batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip will get a contract extension as per a Cricbuzz report. But they might have to reapply for the job like Rahul Dravid.
Will Rahul Dravid call it quits?
With T20 World Cup 2024 six months away, India need a smooth transition and that is why Rahul Dravid is important. Even though under Dravid, India’s T20 performance hasn’t been great, he has managed to win the dressing room’s trust.
However, Rahul Dravid himself has been unsure. InsideSport earlier reported that the former India captain hinted to his close aides that he would not continue beyond Cricket World Cup.
But so far, as he has been travelling and busy with national team commitments, Dravid has not taken a decision.
BCCI will sit and discuss with Rahul Dravid after a week-long break. And a decision is expected by the end of November.
In the meantime, National Cricket Academy (NCA) director VVS Laxman will take charge of the team for the IND vs AUS T20 series.
