Former Cricketer Ashish Nehra’s Take on Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma’s Retirement from T20Is

With future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma up in the air after heartbreaking loss in the World Cup final, Ashish Nehra has come out in support of the two superstars. Ahead of IND vs AUS 1st T20, Nehra said that both stars are still good to play any format of the game.

It must be noted that BCCI will discuss future of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in white-ball cricket ahead of India tour of South Africa. As per reports, Rohit Sharma is unlikely to continue in T20Is while there is still no clarity over Virat Kohli.

Ashish Nehra said age should not determine whether Rohit-Virat should continue. Instead, selectors should pay attention their form in World Cup. The way Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma batted, they can play in any format.

Virat Kohli ended World Cup 2023 as the top-scorer with 765 runs in 11 innings. Rohit Sharma was the second-highest run-getter with 597 runs. But more importantly, Rohit scored those runs at a 125.95 strike rate, the highest among openers. Thus, both prove that even though they may not have played a lot of T20Is, they are good enough to continue for another two years in white-ball cricket, especially with T20 World Cup 2024 seven months away.

“Virat Kohli is scoring 800 runs, 1000 runs in a calendar year. The way Rohit Sharma is batting, any selector will be tempted. Although they might have a discussion about whether or not Kohli and Rohit want to play the format ‘okay I might not play, I might rest’,” Ashish Nehra said on JioCinema.

“Unless they announce their retirement from the format in sometime, I hope that’s not the case. Both Rohit and Virat are good enough to play any format as long as they are scoring runs and having fun,” said Nehra, Nehra added.
