Gareth Southgate’s team selection troubles have worsened, with Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips expected to join the England team late owing to “personal matters.” On Friday night, the Three Lions play Malta at Wembley Stadium before facing North Macedonia in the Euro 2024 Qualifiers. This come in the aftermath of Jude Bellingham pulling out of the squad.
Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips will both be joining their international teammates later this week. The FA announced the pair’s absence at the same time Jude Bellingham and Levi Colwill withdrew from the team. As a result, the number of withdrawals from the initial team has risen to five.
Both players were nominated to Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad on Monday and arrived at St George’s Park. However, following injury tests by England medical specialists, they will return to Real Madrid and Chelsea, respectively.
Bellingham, 20, has been out of the club’s previous two games due to a shoulder injury. Colwill was also out from Chelsea’s 4-4 tie with Manchester City owing to a shoulder injury. Gareth Southgate, the manager, has already faced three withdrawals. Due to injuries, James Maddison, Lewis Dunk, and Callum Wilson will all miss the games against Malta and North Macedonia.
Going into these final two matches, England has already qualified for Euro 2024. Southgate, on the other hand, is looking forward to having another glimpse at his players as they continue to prepare for next summer.
